The Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment of the Republic of Moldova together with the FAO Republic of Moldova and the European Project „Technical Assistance for the Moldova ENPARD Program”, are pleased to invite you to the conference “Conservation of Plant and Animal Genetic Resources”, on Thursday, March 21st 2019, Chisinau, big hall, Jolly Alon Hotel, starting at 09:00.

Representatives of the research environment, public institutions, FAO experts and representatives of successfully projects implemented in the EU regarding conservation of genetic resources were invited to present examples and recommendations that would contribute to the adjustment of objectives and activities in this sector.

Conservation and sustainable use of plant and animal genetic resources are vital for sustaining farm economies in changing socioeconomic and climate scenarios. The genetic diversity of agriculture is associated with a wide range of ecological benefits or ecosystem services, as well as new economic concepts, often having local/regional heritage value, and therefore have a high social and cultural importance.

This event, the first in the field of conservation of genetic resources, will include presentations of the current situation in the Republic of Moldova regarding the elaboration and implementation of strategies and plans for the conservation of plant and animal genetic resources, as well as presentations of success stories and EU/FAO experiences in management genetic resources.

The purpose of the conference is to provide contributions on improving communication, knowledge sharing and networking among all actors potentially interested in activities related to the conservation of genetic resources in agriculture and identifying sustainable and economically viable use of these resources, having as examples projects from Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, examples of inspiration to make economically viable life for the preservation of neglected breeds and varieties and to encourage farmers and other stakeholders to get involved in similar projects.

Promoting the sustainable use of plant and animal genetic resources is a key strategy for strengthening in-situ conservation or farming.
